Facility Inspections
On top of performing well in its overall grade, this facility performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A-. Inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of B+. The nursing rating includes several factors, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This nursing home provides an incredible 4.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is much better than what is provided by most nursing homes. Finally, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home performed better than the national average. This is usually a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided with better nursing care and having a policy of regularly turning residents to avoid bed sores.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home is also above average in the category of short-term care, where it was awarded a grade of B+. It outpaced most facilities in this category. In calculating these short-term care ratings, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to devise a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. This place offered more registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most nursing homes. The last item we assessed in this area is the number of residents that returned home from the facility. It performed better than most facilities in this area with 52.3 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we graded was long-term care. We awarded this nursing home one of our higher grades in this category, with a grade of B. This facility proved to be relatively strong in each area we assessed. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. While we determined this nursing home has an impressive amount of nursing care provided by nurses aids and other nursing staff, we found its vaccination rate to be somewhat lower than we expected. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to just 63.54344 percent of its residents. This is a figure we would like to see this nursing home improve. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this facility had 2.12 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
