Long-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled in our long-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Pneumonia sadly is often a dangerous illness for nursing home residents so we like it when a nursing home doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. The last statistic we assessed was its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this facility had 3.42 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this wasn't as impressive as most of its other scores in this area, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes due to some of the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Facility Inspections
This facility also received a virtually flawless government inspection. As a result, it earned one of our highest scores in that category with an A+. This was one of the few places to receive multiple A+'s. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this facility had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A. Our nursing grade is based on several factors, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This facility provides an impressive 3.7 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Of this total, more than one quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is among the most highly trained levels of nurses. We apply more weight to hours worked by skilled nurses in computing our nursing grades. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as employing a protocol of turning a patient even once per day.
Short-term Care Quality
In our final area, we gave this nursing home an A+ for its short-term care grade. This wrapped up an elite report card. In the category of short-term care, we try to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Remarkably, this nursing home provides about 50% more services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. The last statistic we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community. This nursing home was better than average with 51.5 percent of its patients able to return home.
