One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this category generally have few of these severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received an A+ short-term care grade, rendering it one of the few facilities to receive more than one A+ category scores. In computing our short-term care grades, we assess a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This category is often a fair assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. This place is the gold standard when it comes to skilled nursing staffing. It offered about 50% more registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the typical facility. The last datapoint we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Arizona in this area with 70.6 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
Adding to its first-rate assessment, this facility also was given a superb long-term care score, with a grade of A. For long-term care residents, the facility's primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. One of the datapoints we considered in addition to nurse's aid hours is vaccines. It does not appear that this nursing home submitted information about vaccinations. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Switching gears to our last area, this nursing home received a very strong nursing grade. We awarded it a grade of A- in that category, rounding out a straight A profile. When computing our nursing scores, we factor in both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This facility provides an incredible 5.6 hours of nursing care per resident each day. Out of that total, many of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in the quality measures we assessed. By way of illustration, it performed as well as any nursing home in Arizona when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these statistics as good indicators of the quality of nursing care offered.
