Facility Inspections
This nursing home earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its nearly flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A- in this category. Our inspection ratings are tied to items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this area have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home received 11 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a solid inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. In that category, we awarded this nursing home an B. The nursing grade is based on many datapoints, many of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 4.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which was above the national average. Finally, this nursing home also fared very well in most of the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, it had a low rate of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these metrics to be good measures of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's next most favorable category turned out to be short-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home a C. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we analyze the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This category is often a fair measure of a facility's rehabilitation services. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents who eventually returned home from this facility. We found that 41.2 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was actually below the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we analyzed was long-term care. We gave it a lowly F in this category, which is an abysmal grade. This is obviously a major disappointment. If you are looking for anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at long-term care grades. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 98.941795 percent of its patients, which is more than the vast majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.16 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
