Short-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall score, we gave this facility an A+ for short-term care. Our short-term care grade is typically employed to assess a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To provide highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country with 62.5 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this nursing home also excelled in the area of inspections, where it earned an A-. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This facility received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to pose an immediate risk to resident health or safety. A few relatively minor dings aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. The nursing rating assesses a handful of components, most of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. About one-fourth of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most skilled nurses. This is an impressive ratio of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours performed by these types of nurses more in determining our nursing grades. Lastly, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This place fared well in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided with better nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we scored is long-term care, which is this facility's weakest category. It received an abysmal F for this area, which is obviously a bit of a concern. For prospective patients seeking a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Fortunately, this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is a very solid datapoint. Surprisingly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.89 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
