Facility Inspections
The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection grade. In fact, its inspection grade was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave it an A+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection scores. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some can be quite insignificant. This facility was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of these deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to patient safety or health. A couple of minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we also would like to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home received strong long-term care marks this year. We awarded them one of our higher grades in this area, with a B. This turned out to be the nursing home's second strongest grade. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. One of the criteria we considered on top of nurse's aid hours is vaccines. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 84.33451 percent of its patients. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
The third category we graded was short-term care. This nursing home's was given an abysmal short-term care grade where it received an F. Our short-term care scores are thought to be most meaningful for residents in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually requires additional highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not just nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Considering its poor grade in this category, we weren't stunned to learn that this facility offered substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most facilities. The last item we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 3.3 percent of its residents returning home. This was well below the national average.
Nurse Quality
The last area we assessed was nursing. We gave it an abysmal F for this category, which is an abysmal grade. This is clearly a significant disappointment. In computing our nursing grades, we assess both nursing hours and the training levels of the nurses. With just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day, this nursing home's nurse staffing levels were well below the national average. This nursing home also had abysmal scores in several of the quality-based metrics to pair with its weak nursing hour totals. For starters, we looked at the percent of patients experiencing pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than twice the national average in this metric. This is quite alarming when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of receiving a very weak nursing rating.
