Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received a very impressive nursing grade. This proved to be its best category. In this category, we awarded this nursing home an A-. When computing a nursing home's nursing score, we look at the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents and the level of skill of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Massachusetts in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of turning patients at least once a day.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Adding to this facility's impressive resume, we awarded this facility an A- for our inspections rating. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report, which is still very impressive. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home was given a strong long-term care grade as well. We awarded it one of our higher grades in that category with a grade of B+. Facilities that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is far higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The last category we scored is short-term care. This nursing home was given a strong nursing rating in our assessment, with a B. Even though this is not quite as strong as many of its other scores, this is still one of the better scores for this category. In the category of short-term care, we seek to qualify indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. However, according to the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 5 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
