We want to point out that this facility really outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our best scores in that category with an A+. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some end up being relatively insignificant. This nursing home received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to patient safety or health. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

Another one of this nursing home's more favorable category grades came in the area of long-term care. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. This nursing home was also able to keep its patients out of the hospital. While it had 1.78 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was better than the majority of nursing homes due to it having some more complex patients.

Historical

Sadly, this facility only received a D for its short-term care rating, which is not an impressive grade. Short-term care grades are generally employed to score a nursing home's rehabilitation services To provide quality rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we considered the number of patients who who were able to eventually return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.

The final area we assessed is nursing, which ended up being a weak link for this facility. We gave this nursing home a grade of D in our nursing category. Nursing scores are based in large part on nurse staffing levels. This nursing home averaged a meager 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This facility fared well when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
