Facility Inspections
In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this nursing home performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite insignificant. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Another quality feature for this facility is that it received a very positive long-term care score. Indeed, this ended up being its second best category grade. In this category, we gave this nursing home a grade of B+. When facilities receive this kind of score in this category it is a good sign for resident care and indicates that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. Once we concluded our assessment of the amount of care provided by nurses, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 98.67987 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a deadly condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility does not roll the dice on this issue. This nursing home also keeps its patients out of the hospital. Although it had 1.82 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was better than most nursing homes since it had more complex patients.
Nurse Quality
Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. The nursing grade features numerous subcategories. The most heavily weighted one is the amount of time nurses spent with residents. This nursing home averages 0 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these areas as predictive indicators of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the final category, this nursing home was given an acceptable short-term care score of C. Our short-term care grade is commonly used to grade a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To offer highly rated rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide better levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. We weren't able to locate registered nurse or physical therapy staffing data for this nursing home. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 23.3 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.
