One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received a very impressive short-term care grade. This proved to be its best category. In that area, we awarded this facility an A. Short-term care grades are often employed to grade a facility's rehabilitation services. To have highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to offer higher levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from this facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in the country with 76.6 percent of its residents returning home.

This facility has earned near flawless health inspections in recent years. We gave them an A- in this area. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection grades. One key factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some end up being quite minor. This facility was assessed 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to be an imminent threat to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Turning to an additional strength for this nursing home, we awarded them one of our more positive scores in our long-term care category as well, with a grade of B+. For prospective residents in need of a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. This facility's vaccination data weren't as favorable a few of the other statistics in this category, such as its nursing hours data. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to just 81.818184 percent of its residents. We'd love to see some improvement in this area in the future. Although its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, we were pleased to find facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Moving on to our final category, this facility was given a very strong nursing grade. Although this isn't quite as impressive as many of its other grades, this is nevertheless one of the more favorable scores a facility can receive. In determining our nursing scores, we weigh both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This nursing home provided 4.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is among the higher figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by both of these figures. On top of offering high levels of nursing care, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its residents suffering falls leading to major injury, this place performed as well as any nursing home California. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are employed.
