Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the reasons this ended up being a quality nursing home is it earned an A+ in our inspections category. This is as good as it gets in this area. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

We also gave this nursing home a score of A for our short-term care grade. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is frequently a meaningful measure of a facility's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The final item we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that 5.2 percent of this nursing home's residents were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility received even higher grades in the area of nursing. In fact, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A-. Nursing grades are tied to quality and quantity of nursing care. This particular nursing home provided 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a protocol of turning a patient at least once a day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

This facility's least impressive category was long-term care, which is the final area we assessed. In this category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of just D. We wanted to draw your attention to this potential weak spot, but you shouldn't over-emphasize one bad category either. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. Once we assessed the amount of nursing care, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. We were optimistic to learn that this nursing home vaccinates 99.55556 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this facility was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
