In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this facility excelled at short-term care. In fact, we awarded it an A for that category. In determining our short-term care scores, we scrutinize the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This grade is frequently a meaningful measure of a facility's rehabilitation services. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this nursing home provided registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 6.8 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A- in our nursing category. Nursing grades are heavily correlated with nurse staffing levels. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

In addition, this facility also earned top notch government inspections in recent years. We gave them one of our more favorable grades in that area, with a grade of B+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are quite minor. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily something to panic about.

Switching gears to the last category, this facility was given a very strong long-term care rating. In fact, we gave it a B+ in that area, topping off one of our more impressive report cards. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. Once we concluded our assessment of the volume of care provided by nurses, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia tragically can be a deadly illness for nursing home patients so we prefer when a nursing home does not leave its residents vulnerable. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
