Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This facility received a strong overall grade as described above, but we wanted to note its excellent short-term care grade. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this area. In the category of short-term care, we strive to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We analyze a facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. It doesn't look like this facility submitted registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. The final statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that 6.6 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

Adding to its impressive profile, this facility also performed well in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our highest grades in that area with an A. Our inspection grades weigh several factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this area typically have few severe deficiencies. While this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

Turning to the category of nursing care, this facility didn't perform quite as well in this area as some of the categories discussed above. Nevertheless, a grade of B- in this category is by no means a bad score. When computing a facility's nursing grade, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses are with residents and the levels of training of those nurses. This facility provides only 0.5 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a somewhat alarming figure as it is well below the national average. Lastly, although this facility got dinged a bit for its nursing hours, it excelled in some of our quality-based measures. With fewer than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it fared very well in this area.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The last area we assessed is long-term care. This nursing home was awarded a favorable long-term care score in our assessment, with a grade of B-. Although this was not nearly as strong as many of its other category grades, this remains a decent grade in this category. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are an important measure. After considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is more than the average nursing home. This nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
