Facility Inspections
This nursing home received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its excellent health inspections in recent years. We gave them an A+ in this category. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This nursing home received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to resident health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this nursing home's higher category scores came in the category of long-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B. It actually outperformed most nursing homes in this category. Facilities that do well in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 99.479164 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is often a deadly ailment for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a facility does not leave this to chance. This place was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 1.49 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this nursing home is its favorable grade in nursing. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with an D. The nursing grade features a number of subcategories. The most important factor is the quantity of hours nurses spend with patients. This place averaged only 3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing scores. This place fared well when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to our next category, we gave this facility a D for our short-term care category. This was the nursing home's worst category grade. In computing our short-term care grades, we analyze the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is considered to be a fair assessment of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. In this nursing home's case, it looks like it provides fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than the average facility. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents that who were able to eventually return home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 41 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
