Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing grade. We gave them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. The nursing grade is based on a number of subcategories. The most important variable is the amount of time nurses spent with patients. This particular facility provided 5 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This was one of the better totals we found. In addition, a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of providing high levels of care, this nursing home was also above average in several of the major quality measures we assessed in this category. It performed well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also received a virtually flawless inspection report. As a result, it earned one of our highest grades in that area with an A+. This was one of the few nursing homes to receive multiple A+ category grades. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively minor. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Another strength for this nursing home is long-term care, where it was given an A+ grade. This is simply as elite as it gets in this category. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to provide residents with better supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. On top of providing very impressive levels of nursing care and other staffing, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This figure is also much higher than most nursing homes. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.07 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a substantially lower hospitalization rate than most nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
In our last category, we gave this facility an A+ for its short-term care score. This completed a very impressive report card. Short-term care scores are based on the facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This means a wide range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, in addition to other forms of therapy. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. The last datapoint we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents that returned home from the facility. This place fared better than most nursing homes in this area with 50.9 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, less than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
