Short-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled in our short-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Short-term care ratings are based on a facility's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a wide scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. This place is the gold standard when it comes to skilled nursing staffing. In fact, it offered approximately 1.5 times as many registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical nursing home. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The final metric we assessed in this category is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Arizona in this area with 73.6 percent of its residents returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given an A+ for its long-term care score. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. On top of assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 96 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is often a life threatening health condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not leave its residents vulnerable. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Facility Inspections
Continuing with its amazing performance, this facility also received an A+ inspection rating. This grade is based on its recent government inspection reports. An A+ in this category is one of the highest complements we can pay to a facility. Our inspection grades weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher grades in this area generally have few severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
In the final category, this facility received another A+ for its nursing grade. This topped off an incredible report card of four A+'s. The nursing rating is based on quite a few subcategories, many of which are associated with levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided 7.9 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This was one of the higher figures we found. Furthermore, a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. On top of providing high levels of nursing care, this place also excelled in several of the quality measures we assessed. With less than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the nation in this category.
