Facility Inspections
We also wanted to point out that this facility has received near flawless inspections recently. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this area. Arguably the most important factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this area typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also was awarded an A+ short-term care grade, making it one of the few nursing homes to be given several A+ category grades. In computing our short-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The objective is to formulate a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. This nursing home excelled in the two key staffing areas we assessed. The facility provided about 50% more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the average nursing home. This is definitely a very favorable sign. The final datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of residents that ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Colorado in this area with 60 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given an A+ for its long-term care score. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nursing hours is vaccines. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccination to 96.25 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a reliable method to avoid unnecessary deaths for the elderly population. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
In our final area, we awarded this nursing home an A+ for its nursing rating. This completed a very favorable profile. Nursing ratings are tied to quantity of nursing care available. This nursing home provided 6.5 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This was one of the better totals we found. Furthermore, a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of providing high levels of care, this place also excelled in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. With less than 5 percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Colorado in this category. This is typically an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls. Many pressure ulcers could be avoided by providing better nursing care and a protocol of turning residents more often.
