Short-term Care Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ short-term care grade. This is as good as it gets in this area. In computing these short-term care grades, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to create a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. It outperformed the vast majority of facilities in the country in this area with 64.6 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
This facility also earned an A+ inspection grade, making it one of the rare nursing homes to receive multiple A+'s in our category grades. This is based on the nursing home's inspection reports. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some can be relatively minor. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we looked at is long-term care. This facility excelled in our long-term care rating also. We gave them an elite grade of A+ in this area. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. After looking at the significant amount of nursing hours provided by this nursing home, we then looked at the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is much higher than most nursing homes. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.66 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
The last area we assessed is nursing, where this nursing home received a grade of A. This topped off a very impressive profile. Very few nursing homes received an A- or higher in every single category. In calculating a nursing home's nursing rating, we consider the amount of time nurses spend with residents as well as the level of skill of the nurses. This place provided 5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is among the highest figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by these statistics. In addition to providing high levels of nursing care, this nursing home was also above average in several of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. By way of illustration, it performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These data points are generally good indicators of the quality of nursing care a nursing home offers.
