Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This facility received a strong overall score as described above, but we especially want to note its excellent short-term care score. We gave them an A in this area. In determining these short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last item we looked at in this category is the number of residents who returned home from the nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

This facility received high grades in the area of nursing as well. In fact, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A. The nursing category consists of a handful of factors, many of which are based on nursing hours. This nursing home averages 0.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This place performed very well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

This nursing home also excelled in the category of inspections, where it received an impressive grade of A-. Few facilities performed better in this category. These inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The last area we graded is long-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this category, which is a rock bottom grade. We would not simply rule out a nursing home as a result of one bad grade though. If you are seeking services other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care ratings. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is higher than the average nursing home. Surprisingly, this place also fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
