Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home earned a short-term care grade which is stronger than its overall grade. We gave this facility a B+ in this category. This really helped its overall profile. Our short-term care scores are presumably more meaningful for those needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation typically requires more skilled nursing. This means not merely nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B

This nursing home's inspection grade exceeded its overall score as well. We awarded them one of our better grades in that category, with a B. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining our inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite insignificant. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

Another reason we rated this facility so highly is that it earned an A+ nursing score. Our nursing grade consists of several datapoints, but the most important one is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home California in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as employing a protocol of turning a patient at least once a day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final area we scored was long-term care. We awarded this nursing home a grade of B- in this category. In computing our long-term care ratings, we scrutinize the assistance with daily living offered to a facility's residents. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is higher than most nursing homes. This facility was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
