Facility Inspections
This nursing home received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its excellent government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with higher grades in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This means that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple of minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility received its second highest category grade in the area of long-term care. We awarded this facility a grade of C in this area, which is a decent grade. Long-term care grades focus on a nursing home's assistance with daily living rather than the skilled therapy or healthcare services that are critical to a skilled nursing facility. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 96.06741 percent of its patients, which is more than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this nursing home was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we assessed was short-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of C. In determining our short-term care scores, we analyze a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is more often than not a reliable measure of a facility's rehabilitation. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The final item we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is actually below average.
Nurse Quality
The final category we rated was nursing, which ended up being a weak spot for this nursing home. We gave this nursing home a D in the area of nursing. Our nursing score is based on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We weigh both the levels of licensure of the nurses as well as the number of hours spent with residents. This nursing home provides 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is slightly below the national average. To pair with its below average totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place had bad marks in many of the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. For starters, we looked at the percent of residents sustaining falls which led to major injury. This place was at more than 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is quite alarming in light of the fact that so many falls could be avoided with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of earning a poor nursing rating.
