Facility Inspections
To go along with its strong overall score, we awarded this nursing home an A+ for our inspections rating. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this area usually have few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
We also wanted to point out the fact that this nursing home performed well in our short-term care rating. We awarded them an exemplary grade of A+ in this area. In computing our short-term care grades, we size up the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This category is considered to be a meaningful assessment of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. Remarkably, this place provides approximately one and a half times as many hours of services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most facilities we looked at. This is typically an excellent sign. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy staffing, we found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in the nation in this area with 77.1 percent of its patients returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this metric.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on our third area, this first-rate nursing home also dominated in the category of long-term care. In this area, we gave it a A+. Very few facilities performed better in this category. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. One of the criteria we considered after nurse's aid hours was vaccinations. It doesn't look like this nursing home provided information on its vaccination levels. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
The final area we graded was nursing, where this facility was awarded an A. This rounded out an elite report card. Only a select few facilities earned an A- or better in every category. Our nursing score assesses many components, however, the most important one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provided 8.1 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is among the higher totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by both of these figures. In addition to offering high levels of nursing care, this place also excelled in the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, it performed as well as any facility in the nation in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We view these metrics as reliable indicators of the caliber of nursing care offered.
