Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

Although we did not rate this facility well overall, we want to point out its much more favorable nursing grade this year. We gave it a respectable grade of B+ in this area, which was much better than its overall grade. In calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we weigh the number of hours nurses are caring for patients as well as the level of licensure of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This nursing home performed very well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home's next best category is short-term care. We awarded it a B- in this category. This is basically a slightly below average score in this category. In crafting our short-term care scores, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our purpose is to formulate a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. In this nursing home's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients that eventually returned home from this facility. We found that 5.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was well below the national average.

Facility Inspections

This nursing home received a grade of just D in the area of inspections. Our inspection grades factor in many items on the facility's recent inspection reports. If you see too many deficiencies on the reports, this is typically a bad sign. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to the well being of residents. This particular nursing home was hit with 5 deficiencies by CMS. The only favorable thing we found is that none of its deficiencies were in the categories that suggest they created a risk to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility also received 26 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Switching gears to our fourth area, this nursing home really did not fare very well in this area either. With a very poor grade of F in long-term care, this is about as terrible as it gets. Long-term care ratings in this range generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids, as well as the levels of routine medical care available. Once we concluded our assessment of the volume of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 93.23017 percent of its patients against pneumonia. To our surprise, this place actually fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This was its best score in this category.
