We also wanted to point out that this nursing home has earned nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We gave them an A in this area. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining our inspection ratings. One key factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite insignificant. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Compounding its top-shelf assessments in other areas, we gave this nursing home a score of A for its long-term care score. Facilities that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. On top of considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is significantly higher than most nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.15 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes.

This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B+ in this area. Our nursing grade is based on the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We consider both the levels of training of the nurses and the amount of time spent with residents. This nursing home provides 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a policy of turning residents even once per day.

The next category we analyzed was short-term care, in which this nursing home received a C. This is this facility's least impressive category. This is nevertheless not a major area of concern. In crafting our short-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The final statistic we considered in this category is the number of residents who were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that just 41.3 percent of this facility's patients returned home. This figure was below average.
