The primary reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection score. In fact, its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave this facility a grade of A. Inspection grades account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category generally have very few of these severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

Another one of this facility's higher category scores came in the area of short-term care. In that area, we gave this facility a B. In computing these short-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to create a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This proved to be a real strength for this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities with 70.1 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.

Sadly, this facility's third highest category is long-term care. As it turns out, with a D in this area, it still performed somewhat badly. Facilities that don't score well in long-term care often don't provide as much nursing care and also may be struggling in some of the areas of routine medical care we assessed. After considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination record. We were somewhat surprised to discover that this nursing home vaccinated a relatively low 67.65799 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this facility wasn't as bad as we expected at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Although it had 2.31 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not bad due to it having more complicated patients.

The last category we looked at was nursing, which is this nursing home's least impressive category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in that category. Nursing ratings are primarily based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. This facility averaged just 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is well below average. Lastly, we also looked at some quality-based metrics in determining our nursing ratings. This facility was above average in two of the major metrics we focus on, with solid marks for avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
