Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are relatively minor. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility performed well in our short-term care rating. We gave them an impressive score of A+ in this area. In forming these short-term care scores, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Remarkably, this nursing home provides approximately one and a half times as many hours of services from registered nurses and physical therapists than most facilities we assessed. This is certainly an excellent sign. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities in this area with 70.9 percent of its residents returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we looked at was long-term care. This facility also received an A+ long-term care grade, rendering it one of the few nursing homes to be awarded multiple A+ category grades. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary objective is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination records. It doesn't appear that this facility submitted data regarding vaccinations. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Nurse Quality
In the last category we assessed, this facility was awarded a very favorable grade of A in our nursing category. With this grade, the nursing home finished off a straight A report card. When calculating a nursing home's nursing grade, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses are with patients as well as the level of licensure of the nurses. This nursing home provided 7.4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which is among the higher figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by these figures. In addition to offering impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. By way of illustration, it performed as well as any nursing home in the country in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these data points as reliable measures of the caliber of nursing care being provided.
