Facility Inspections
In addition to faring well overall, this facility also earned a nearly flawless inspection report. As a result, it received one of our best grades in that category with an A+. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find deficiency counts for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
On the list of its many dominant scores, this nursing home received an excellent long-term care score. In fact, we gave it a grade of A in that category. Facilities that receive this type of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure residents are well cared for. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by nurses, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia can be a deadly condition for nursing home patients so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Although it had 1.81 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was better than most nursing homes due to it having some more complicated patients.
Nurse Quality
Among its many impressive grades, this facility received an excellent nursing grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A- in that category. Nursing scores are tied to nurse staffing levels. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. Approximately a quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most skilled nurses. This is a high percentage of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours more in computing our nursing scores. Finally, we also assessed certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these metrics as good indicators of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we scored turned out to be this nursing home's worst category. Nevertheless, even its worst category would likely be a strength for many facilities. In fact, we gave it an above average grade of B for our short-term care category. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we size up the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is frequently a useful measure of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. Finally, we looked at the number of residents that eventually returned home from this nursing home. We found that 36.8 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
