The main reason this facility received a decent overall score is its impeccable health inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our better grades in that category, with an A-. This is a much better grade than the place's overall score, which was decent but certainly not elite. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some end up being quite minor. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This means CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few relatively minor dings are not necessarily the end of the world.

In addition, we also wanted to note that this nursing home was awarded favorable long-term care marks this year. We gave them one of our higher grades in that category, with a B. This proved to be the nursing home's second strongest score. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 99.52381 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

The next category we assessed is short-term care, where this facility was given a B- in this category. Short-term care grades are typically used to grade a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation To offer good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature better levels of skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. Unfortunately, we were not able to locate registered nurse or physical therapy staffing data for this nursing home. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 5.9 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.

Our final category is nursing, in which we gave this facility a C in that category. In calculating a facility's nursing score, we weigh the number of hours nurses are caring for patients as well as the level of licensure of the nurses. This nursing home provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This figure is significantly below average. Finally, we also considered a few quality-based measures in this category. While this facility didn't rank well in terms of its nursing hours, it fared much better in some of the quality measures we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, this facility fared better than the national average. This is generally a reliable indicator that a place has quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented with better nursing care.
