Facility Inspections
To go along with its decent overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. This grade is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this category tend to have very few severe deficiencies. This nursing home was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Short-term Care Quality
In addition, we also would like to point out that this facility was given impressive short-term care marks this year. We awarded them one of our better scores in that category, with a B. This proved to be the facility's second strongest score. Our short-term care grades are based on the nursing home's quantity of skilled nursing services. This means a vast scope of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other forms of therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The final measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in Ohio in this area with 58.2 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this facility is its favorable grade in nursing. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a score of D. When determining our nursing grades, we factor in both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provided just 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This statistic is well below the national average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this facility also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics hurt this nursing home's nursing rating significantly.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to our next category, this nursing home really didn't perform very well. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in long-term care, this was this nursing home's worst grade. If you are seeking anything other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care ratings. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Fortunately, this facility gave the vaccine to 97.543 percent of its residents, which is an above average figure. To our surprise, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.97 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than many nursing homes. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
