To go along with its relatively modest overall grade, we gave this nursing home an A for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than its overall score. These inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Another strength of this nursing home is its superb score in long-term care. We awarded it one of our more favorable grades in that category, with a score of A-. Facilities that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly can be a life threatening illness for nursing home patients so we prefer when a facility doesn't leave this to chance. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 2.58 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

Short-term Care Quality
This facility's next most favorable category is short-term care. In that area, we gave this nursing home a C. Short-term care grades are critical for people in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires more skilled nursing. This means a wide scope of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in the country with 53.9 percent of its residents returning home. This is a higher rate than most facilities.
Switching gears to the next area, this facility really didn't fare very well. With a very poor grade of F in nursing, this is this facility's poorest category grade. Our nursing grade includes quite a few factors, however, the primary consideration is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. In addition to receiving below average scores for total nursing hours, this nursing home was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and found that this facility was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this metric. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic really dragged down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
