Facility Inspections
While we gave this nursing home a terrible overall grade, we gave it a grade of B+ for our inspections category. This was the result of the nursing home receiving a decent government inspection report this year. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. It is generally in your best interest to avoid places that have too many deficiencies. This nursing home was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also didn't grade out terribly in the category of short-term care. In fact, we awarded it a C for that area, which is among its better scores. Short-term care ratings are crucial for patients seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes additional skilled nursing services. This means a wide spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. In this facility's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than a typical facility. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who returned home from this facility and found that this facility performed better here. In fact, this facility performed better than most nursing homes in the nation in this area with 54.3 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
In addition, we gave this facility an F in the area of nursing care. When determining a nursing home's nursing score, we look at the amount of time nurses spend with patients and the skill levels of the nurses. This facility provided only 3.1 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This facility also had terrible marks in some of the quality-based measures to go along with its low nursing hours. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this measure. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers could be avoided with better nursing care. This metric helped pull down this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to our final area, this facility really didn't fare well in this category either. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in long-term care, this is just about as bad as it gets. For prospective patients looking for a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are very important. One of the factors we considered on top of nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. Fortunately, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 97.3384 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this nursing home also keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.93 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
