Facility Inspections
The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection grade. Its inspection grade was far better than its overall score. In our inspections category, we gave it an A. Arguably the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this area most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a favorable grade in long-term care. This nursing home earned a grade of B in this area, which happens to be one of our higher scores. Facilities that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 99.710144 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a life threatening condition for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a nursing home doesn't leave this to chance. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality
The next area we looked at was nursing, where we gave this facility an F. This was definitely one of this facility's major weaknesses. In calculating our nursing ratings, we factor in both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the training levels of those nurses. This nursing home averaged just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is an alarmingly low total. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing scores. This nursing home performed well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we assessed was short-term care, which is this nursing home's weakest area. Unfortunately, we gave it an F for this category, which is clearly a major disappointment. In determining our short-term care scores, we assess a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is often a solid assessment of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. With a grade this poor for this area, we were not shocked to find that this place was well below average in several staffing metrics we looked at. In fact, it supplied significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most nursing homes. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 3.7 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
