Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a quality facility is that it received an impressive inspection rating. Inspections turned out to be its best category. In this category, we gave this facility an A+. Inspection ratings are tied to pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that score well in this category tend to have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This place received 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This indicates that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to create an immediate risk to resident safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was awarded a strong short-term care grade. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B+ in this area. Our short-term care grades are critical for patients seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a broad scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other types of therapy. When we looked at this facility's physical therapist hours, we found it offered more hours of physical therapy per day to its residents than most nursing homes. The final measure we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Florida in this area with 56.1 percent of its patients returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to an additional strength for this nursing home, we awarded them one of our more favorable scores in our long-term care category as well, with a B. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. On top of assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this place had 4.79 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this area, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the medical complexity of patients.
Nurse Quality
The next area we scored was nursing. We awarded this nursing home a C in this category. In computing a facility's nursing grade, we assess the amount of time nurses are seeing residents and the level of skill of the nurses. This place provides an impressive 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient per day. Lastly, we also factored a few quality measures into our nursing grades. This place was relatively weak in two of the major data points we look at, with below average scores for minimizing its patients' major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are usually good measures of the quality of nursing care provided.
