Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall score was not a highlight, it actually really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A- for that area, which is one of our best scores. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid facilities that had too many deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Despite this deficiency, this nursing home still received a relatively favorable report.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was awarded a strong long-term care grade. As a matter of fact, we awarded it a B in this area, which happens to be one of our better. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents out of the hospital. This facility was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had just 1.59 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
We were surprised to find that this facility also excelled in the area of nursing. We gave it an impressive grade of D for that category, which is one of our best scores. Our nursing score assesses several datapoints, but the paramount one is the quantity of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. To pair with its low total nursing hours per resident, this facility had poor scores in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing scores. For starters, we looked at the percentage of residents sustaining falls which led to serious injury. This place was at more than 1.5 times the national average in this statistic.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we analyzed is short-term care. This nursing home was given a rock bottom grade of F in that category. In calculating our short-term care grades, we size up the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This grade is often a reliable measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. As you might expect, we learned that this facility offers substantially less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than the average facility. The last metric we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 32.4 percent of its residents returning home.
