Short-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of short-term care. Short-term care grades are based on a nursing home's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a broad range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. This nursing home is above the national average both in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents. These are generally good indicators of quality short-term care. The last item we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Kentucky in this area with 69.8 percent of its residents returning home. With most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing rating. This proved to be its second best category grade. In that area, we gave this facility an A. There are several datapoints included in this category. Many of the factors relate to staffing levels. This place boasts a really impressive 4.6 hours of nursing care per patient per day, of which a significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of nursing care, this place also performed well in some of the quality measures we assessed. In terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this facility performed better than the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on our third area, we gave this nursing home a grade of A for its long-term care score. This is a superb grade. When facilities receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of considering the impressive volume of care provided by nurses and other staff at this nursing home, we also were happy with the facility's vaccination statistics. For example, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.04 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a significantly better hospitalization rate than the average nursing home.
Facility Inspections
Adding to its impressive category grades, this nursing home also excelled in inspections, where it earned an impressive grade of A-. This rounded out a straight A report card for this nursing home. Our inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area generally have few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
