Facility Inspections
In addition to faring well overall, this facility also earned a nearly flawless inspection report. As a result, it received one of our best scores in that area with an A+. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be relatively insignificant. This nursing home was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This tells you that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to create an imminent threat to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a score of A+ for its long-term care grade. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to assessing the elite quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff at this nursing home, we also were impressed by the facility's vaccination record. By way of example, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 3.41 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this wasn't as strong as most of its other scores in this category, this number can be skewed for some nursing homes due to the medical complexity of patients.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A-. The nursing rating analyzes a handful of factors, however, the main one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. With 4.2 hours of nursing care per patient each day, this place surpassed the overwhelming majority of nursing homes. Finally, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering falls leading to major injury, this nursing home performed as well as any facility in the nation. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to our final category, this facility was awarded an acceptable short-term care rating. Although this is not quite as dominant as several of its other category grades, this is truly not a major area of concern. In our short-term care category, we attempt to forge a sound gauge for rehabilitation services. In this process, we look at the facility's level of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The last measure we considered in this category is the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that just 19.2 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. This figure is below the national average.
