Facility Inspections
To go along with its relatively modest overall score, we awarded this nursing home an A for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than the facility's overall rating. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection grades. One key factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are relatively minor. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we had positive view of this facility's recent inspections.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's higher category grades was in the area of long-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home a B. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 98.034935 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is better than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.42 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility was awarded its third best category score in the category of short-term care. We awarded this nursing home a C in this category, which is a decent score. Short-term care grades are often employed to measure a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation To have high-end rehabilitation services, facilities generally must have better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. Unfortunately, this facility was below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. The important question is whether this adversely affected quality of care. The final datapoint we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. This proved to be a stronger area than its staffing data. This place fared well in this area with 56 percent of its patients returning home. This was a boost to its score in this category.
Nurse Quality
The final category we analyzed is nursing, which is a weak link for this nursing home. We gave this nursing home a D in our nursing category. The nursing score weighs a number of factors. The most important variable is the number of hours nurses spend with patients. With only 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this place's nurse staffing levels were well below average. In addition to receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this facility was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents suffering pressure ulcers and found this facility was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic pulled down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
