Facility Inspections
While we were not very complementary of this nursing home's overall grade, it received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our highest scores in that category with an A+. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even with this deficiency, this place still received a relatively positive inspection report.
Nurse Quality
Unfortunately, this facility only received a grade of D for its nursing grade, which was actually one of its better category grades. Our nursing grade is largely based on a facility's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. To go along with its below average total nursing hours per patient, this facility had bad scores in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents having falls leading to serious injury. This place was at more than 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is concerning in light of the fact that so many falls could be prevented with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of earning a poor nursing score.
Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, this facility's third best score was long-term care. As it turns out, with a grade of D in this category, it still performed somewhat badly. If you are seeking services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care ratings. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Surprisingly, this facility also fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's weakest category is short-term care, which is the last area we scored. In this area, we gave this nursing home a grade of D. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to assess indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Considering its abysmal rating in this area, we weren't surprised to find this nursing home offers significantly fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most nursing homes. Lastly, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 32.5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
