Long-term Care Quality
We want to point out that this nursing home received a much better grade for long-term care than it did overall. In fact, we gave it one of our best grades in that category with an impressive grade of A. Facilities that do well in long-term care typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 99.62264 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly can be a deadly ailment for nursing home residents so we like it when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in inspections, where it received an A-. Few nursing homes performed as well in this category. Inspection scores weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher scores in this category typically have very few of these severe deficiencies. This place was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies to be an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality
Another strength of this facility is its favorable grade in nursing. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with an impressive grade of D. The nursing score consists of several components, however, the paramount one is the quantity of nurse hours per patient per week. This particular facility averaged a meager 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This number is quite a bit below average. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in computing our nursing ratings. This facility fared well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these statistics to be good measures of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we scored is short-term care, which ended up being this facility's least impressive area. We gave it an abysmal F for this area, which is clearly concerning. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to devise a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The final measure we looked at in this category is the number of residents that returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 4.4 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below average.
