Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid places that have too many severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility wound up receiving a bottom of the barrel score in our long-term care area. It received a lowly F in this area. Nursing homes that do not fare well in this category often don't provide as much nursing care and also may be lagging in a few of the areas of routine medical care we looked at. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination data. Candidly, we were a bit concerned this facility vaccinated just 87.2 percent of its patients for pneumonia. To our surprise, this place actually fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This was its best feature in this category.

Nurse Quality
Unfortunately, we gave this facility an F for its nursing grade. We assessed the licensure of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the number of hours the nurses were with patients, in calculating our grade in this area. This place offered just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing ratings. This facility fared well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the final category, this nursing home really did not fare well in this area either. With a rock bottom grade of F in short-term care, this is really as terrible as it gets. Our short-term care scores are arguably most meaningful for folks in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally mandates additional highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes not just nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. As you might expect, we learned that this place provides significantly less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the average facility. The last metric we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor statistics sunk this nursing home's short-term care score.
