Facility Inspections
The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection score. Its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave this facility an A. Our inspection grades are based on several datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this category tend to have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's better category scores was in the category of long-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of B. It actually outperformed most facilities in this category. Facilities that excel in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 2.82 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as favorable as most of its other scores in this category, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the medical complexity of patients.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of C. Our nursing rating is primarily tied to a nursing home's nurse staffing. This facility averages 2.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which is a very low figure. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility actually excelled in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. It performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we assessed is short-term care. For this category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. Short-term care grades are commonly used to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to offer highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally must have higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. Unfortunately, we found that this place provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The key is determining what bearing this had on the quality of care. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
