Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Places with better scores in this category typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
Among the reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it was awarded a strong short-term care score. Indeed, short-term care is its second most impressive category grade. In that area, we gave this facility a score of A. Short-term care grades are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a vast spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other variations of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. This nursing home performed much better in the final datapoint we assessed in this category, which was the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in Iowa in this area with 67.3 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B. Nursing grades are tied to levels of nurse staffing. With 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this nursing home surpassed the overwhelming majority of facilities. Finally, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In terms of the percentage of its patients suffering falls leading to serious injury, this place performed as well as any nursing home in Iowa.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility's worst area is long-term care, which is the final category we analyzed. For this category, we awarded this facility a grade of just D. We wanted to draw your attention to this possible weak spot, but you should not focus exclusively on a single weak area either. If you are looking for services other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care grades. After assessing nursing hours provided by this nursing home, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination record. Due to its grade in this category, it is surprising to find that this facility received respectable marks in both of these subcategories. In fact, this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Surprisingly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.78 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
