Registered Staff Hours
Nurse Quality
Although we were not complementary of this nursing home's overall grade, it received an impressive nursing rating this year. We gave it a B in this category. Nursing scores are based largely on quality and quantity of nursing care. This facility provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a protocol of turning residents at least once a day.
Facility Inspections
We actually gave this facility a very solid grade in the area of inspections as well. We awarded it a B- in this category. This is better than many facilities in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite minor. This place was assessed 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This indicates that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate threat to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

Short-term Care Quality
The next category we graded is short-term care, where this facility received a C in this area. In determining our short-term care grades, we scrutinize a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This score is often a meaningful assessment of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its level of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to our fourth area, this nursing home didn't perform well in this category either. With a very poor grade of F in long-term care, this is just about as bad as it gets. Nursing homes that receive this kind of score in this category may not provide the kind of consistent 24/7 care that some other nursing homes offer. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Candidly, we were a bit alarmed this nursing home vaccinated a relatively low 78.85117 percent of its residents. Surprisingly, this facility actually fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This is its best score in this category.
