Long-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of long-term care. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care typically provide patients with closer supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. One of the statistics we considered after this facility's quality nursing hours was vaccinations. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for seniors. This combination proved to be successful as this facility keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Short-term Care Quality
This exemplary nursing home also fared very well in the category of short-term care, where we gave it a score of A+. Only a small group of nursing homes fared better in this area. Our short-term care grade is often employed to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to have good rehabilitation services, facilities generally must have better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. Remarkably, this nursing home provides roughly 50% more hours of services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we assessed. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country with 65.2 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
Another reason we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received an A+ nursing grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. In determining a nursing home's nursing score, we consider the amount of time nurses are with patients as well as the level of skill of those nurses. This facility provided 4.6 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This was one of the highest totals we found. In addition, we found that a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of offering high levels of care, this nursing home also excelled in several of the quality measures we assessed. With less than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the state in this category.
Facility Inspections
In the last category we looked at, this nursing home also excelled in inspections, where it received a grade of B+. Inspection ratings account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher grades in this area tend to have few of these severe deficiencies. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
