Facility Inspections
This facility earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its excellent inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A+ in this category. Inspection scores are tied to datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that excel in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility was given its second best category score in the area of long-term care. We awarded this facility a grade of C in this category, which is a reasonably acceptable score. In our long-term care category, we weigh the quantity of services provided by a facility, as well as some qualitative measures. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 99.4186 percent of its patients. This nursing home keeps its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this facility only earned a grade of D for its short-term care rating, which is well below average in this category. Our short-term care grades are presumably more meaningful for those in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally mandates additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not merely nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Based on its abysmal grade in this area, we were not surprised to find that this facility provides significantly fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. The final metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 4.8 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to the final category, this nursing home really did not fare well. Due to a poor grade of F in nursing, this was this nursing home's worst category. Nursing ratings are primarily tied to the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This place offered a meager 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics pulled down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
