Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

This nursing home received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its excellent health inspections in recent years. We gave them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are relatively insignificant. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home also was given a favorable long-term care score. In fact, we awarded them a B+ in this area, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. After we finished assessing the volume of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is too frequently a deadly ailment for nursing home patients so we like it when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility's third most favorable category was short-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home a B-. In calculating our short-term care grades, we size up a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other licensed professionals. This category is typically a solid assessment of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that this nursing home submitted information on registered nurse or physical therapist staffing. The last measure we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We discovered that just 6.1 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

The last area we assessed was nursing, ended up being this nursing home's least impressive category. We gave this facility a grade of D in this area. This really was one of just a few weak links in a quality report card. We assessed the levels of nurses working for the facility, as well as the number of hours the nurses spent with patients, in computing our grade in this category. This facility offered a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This nursing home fared well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
