Short-term Care Quality
One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in short-term care. This is as good as it gets in this area. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is more often than not a useful measure of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The last datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of residents that returned home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in California in this area with 74.3 percent of its patients returning home. For most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home has earned near flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A- in this category. Our inspection grades are tied to several datapoints located in the a nursing home's inspections. Nursing homes that score well in this category have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its profile, this facility also earned a grade of B+ for its nursing rating. This is a well above average score in this category. The nursing category is based on a handful of components, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This place boasts a really impressive 5.6 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, of which a significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. In addition to providing high levels of care, this nursing home also fared well in many of the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, in terms of the number of its patients sustaining falls leading to serious injury, this facility outpaced the national average. This is often a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we rated was long-term care, in which this nursing home was awarded a grade of B. While this proved to be its weakest category grade, this is nevertheless an impressive rating. When nursing homes receive this type of grade in this category it is a good sign for resident care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to offering very impressive levels of nursing care and other staffing, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents out of the hospital. The last datapoint we assessed is its hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 4.77 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this area, this figure may be skewed for some facilities due to the medical complexity of residents.
