Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Our nursing score consists of a handful of subcategories, but the primary one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This facility provided 5.1 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This was one of the more impressive totals we found. In addition, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. In addition to offering high levels of care, this place also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, it performed as well as any facility in the country when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these datapoints as good measures of the quality of nursing care being provided.
Long-term Care Quality
This exemplary facility also fared very well in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a grade of A+. Few facilities performed better in this category. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in this category typically provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure residents are kept in good health. In addition to offering well above average levels of nursing care and other staffing, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.6 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
Facility Inspections
Continuing with its amazing performance, this nursing home also earned an A+ inspection grade. This grade is based on the facility's recent government inspection reports. An A+ in this category is one of the highest complements we can pay to a nursing home. Inspection grades account for several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category tend to have few of these severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we analyzed is short-term care, in which this nursing home was awarded a grade of B. This actually ended up being this nursing home's worst category. A facility could be doing a lot worse when it's lowest score still outperforms most facilities. Short-term care grades are generally used to assess a facility's rehabilitation services. In order to provide highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must feature better levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. One reason for this place's favorable grade in this category is that it provides more care from registered nurses to its patients than the typical facility. The final item we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that 15.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
