While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. Our inspection ratings are based on many datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important thing to look for on these inspections. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to patient safety. This facility was hit with 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered severe. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies to be an imminent risk to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing grade. Nursing turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we awarded this nursing home an D. When calculating a facility's nursing grade, we consider the amount of time nurses spend with patients and the levels of training of the nurses. This facility averaged just 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is not a very impressive figure. In addition to receiving below average scores for total nursing hours, this facility was less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients suffering pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic.

Unfortunately, this facility only earned a D for its short-term care score, which is not a score to write home about. In the category of short-term care, we seek to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at a facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. With a grade this poor for this category, we were not shocked to learn that this facility was well below average in many staffing metrics we focus on. The facility supplied significantly fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most facilities. The last area we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. It performed better in this area, with 50.5 percent of its patients returning home. This was just about this nursing home's only redeeming quality in this area.

Long-term Care Quality

The final category we graded was long-term care. This nursing home received an abysmal grade of F in that category. Facilities that do not fare well in this category typically aren't as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine medical care we looked at. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 79.207924 percent of its residents. This is pretty significantly less than average. To our surprise, this facility actually fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 1.43 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This is its best feature in this category.
