Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was decent, it really fared well in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection ratings are based on datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that excel in this area have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we had a generally favorable view of this facility's inspections.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was awarded a strong long-term care grade. Indeed, we awarded them a B in that category, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. After considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 97.63313 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 1.73 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most nursing homes due to it having some more complicated patients.

Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we gave this nursing home an F. This is certainly not one of this facility's better areas. In calculating a facility's nursing rating, we look at the quantity of hours nurses are with patients and the level of licensure of the nurses. This facility averaged only 3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is an alarmingly low total. On top of receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this place was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and found this facility was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is a bad sign when you consider that many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic dragged down this nursing home's nursing rating significantly.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we rated was short-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this category, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. This is obviously a significant disappointment. Our short-term care grades are probably more meaningful for patients requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically mandates more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not merely nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. In this nursing home's case, it looks like it offers fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the average facility. The last item we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 40.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics sunk this facility's short-term care score.
